Boxing: India wins 9 medals at boxing tournament for women in Turkey

India won 9 medals - one gold, four silver and four bronze - at the Ahmet Comert youth boxing tournament for women in Istanbul, Turkey.

Soniya defeated Zhazira Urakabeva from Kazakhstan 4-1, to win gold in the 48kg category. The silver medal winners included Niharika Gonella (75kg), Shashi Chopra (57kg), Parveen (54kg), and Ankushita Boro (64kg).

Gonella lost to Kazakhstan's Shamonova Anastasiia. Russia's Anastasiia Artamonova got the better of Parveen. Boro, on the other hand, went down to Kazakhstan's Zhazira Urakabeva.

Earlier, Tilotama Chanu (60kg), Jyoti Gulia (48kg), Lalita (64kg) and Manisha (69kg) had to be content with bronze medals after losing their respective semi-final matches.

As many as 16 Indian youth women participated in the XXXI International “Ahmet Comert” Boxing Tournament at Istanbul, Turkey which was held from 11th to 17th September.

An amateur boxing tournament which is considered as the biggest competition in the world, is named after Ahmet Comert (1926–1990), a Turkish amateur boxer, coach, referee, judge and sports official. He served in the executive committee of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) and died of apparent heart failure while on duty during the 1990 European Junior Boxing Championship held in the Czechoslovakia.
