PV Sindhu became the first Indian to win the Korea Open Super Series by defeating Nozomi Okuhara of Japan 22-20 11-21 21-18 on Sunday.

Sindhu, who had lost to Okuhara in the World Badminton Championships final three weeks back, beat eighth seeded Okuhara in an hour and 23 minutes.

Sindhu saved two game points to win the first game but was completely outclassed in the second as the Japanese came storming back. The Indian star fought back brilliantly by taking a big lead in the mid-break of the decider and despite a late surge from Okuhara, Sindhu held on to win the tournament.

“She was obviously following what Gopi and she have been working on strokes. It was her unhurried temperament, waiting patiently for her chance to kill the shuttle in those strokes that was different. She has the smash but today she was sharp in follow-up taps and pushes to get the winners,” Coach Amrish Shinde told to reporters after the match.

The 22-year-old, shutler clinched the women’s singles title and one the $600,000 tournament.

This is her second Super Series win this year after India Open.
