Unseeded, 24-year-old American tennis player, Sloane Stephens, won her first Grand Slam title by defeating fellow American Madison Keys 6-3 6-0 in US Open final on Sunday.

Stephens took a $3.7 million prize from the biggest victory of her career.

“I should just retire now,” Stephens said. “I’ll never be able to top this. Talk about a comeback. Things just have to come together and the past six weeks they really have.”

“It’s incredible,” Stephens said. “I had surgery on January 23. If someone told me then I’d win the US Open, it’s impossible I’d say, absolutely impossible. This journey has been incredible and honestly I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

Stephens rose to prominence upon reaching the semifinals of the 2013 Australian Open, notably defeating Serena Williams en route. Since then, she has reached a career-high singles ranking of 11 in the world.

On the way to win her first Grand Slam, Stephens defeated 2015 US Open finalist Roberta Vinci in straight sets in the first round, then followed that up by upsetting 11th seed Dominika Cibulková in three sets. She then won against Ashleigh Barty and 30th seed Julia Görges, to advance to her first US Open quarterfinal. She faced 16th seed Anastasija Sevastova, and was victorious in three sets, advancing to the semifinal, where she defeated Venus Williams in three sets, reaching her first final in a Grand Slam tournament.
