US Open 2017: Roger Federer defeats American teenager Frances Tiafoe

Swiss tennis player Roger Federer (36), who is currently ranked world No. 3 in men's singles, defeated  American teenager Frances Tiafoe (19) in the first round of the US Open 2017 on Wednesday.

Tiafoe has been described as a future American tennis star.

The five time champion Federer won 4-6 6-2 6-1 1-6 6-4 in his first ever match under the Arthur Ashe Stadium roof.

Federer got broken in the first game and dropped the opening set of the topsy-turvy match. He then appeared to take control by grabbing eight of nine games to seize the second and third sets. “I was quite up and down,” Federer said.

Federer's build-up to the tournament was disrupted by a back injury.

Federer, is searching for his third Grand Slam title of the year, following his success at the Australian Open in January and Wimbledon in July.

He has won 19 Grand Slam singles titles, the most in history for a male tennis player and has held the world No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings for a record total of 302 weeks.In majors, Federer has won a record eight Wimbledon titles, five Australian Open titles, a record five consecutive US Open titles and one French Open title. 

Many players and analysts consider Federer the greatest tennis player of all time. 

A crowd of almost 24,000 packed in to see his return to New York.Next, Federer will face Slovenia's Blaz Kavcic or Mikhail Youzhny of Russia on Thursday.
