Service Tax Department summons Sania Mirza for allegedly evading tax

Service Tax Department summoned Indian professional tennis player Sania Mirza, for allegedly evading tax on the Rs 1 crore she received from Telangana government in 2014, for winning the US Open mixed-doubles title and being the 'brand ambassador' of the youngest state in the country.

According to the latest prize money list released by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) in 2017, Sania has earned a total of $ 6.523357 million in prize money - Rs 43.726 crores.

As per media reports, Sania has to pay about Rs 20 lakh (15% service tax on Rs 1 cr, fine and penalty).

The tennis player who was formerly ranked No. 1 in the women's doubles rankings, has been directed to appear in person or through an authorised agent on Feb 16.

The department has also directed her to not to leave country without permission.

Sania was named in Time magazine's 2016 list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
