Rio Olympics: Sania-Bopanna win mixed doubles against Australian pair

Indian pair of Sania Mirza (29) and Rohan Bopanna (36) won over Australian pair of Samantha Stosur (32) and John Peers (28) in mixed doubles event of tennis competition at the Rio Olympics, 7-5 6-4. 

Mirza and Bopanna defeated Australian pair with a straight-set win in 73 minutes match, braking their opponents in the opening set by going 5-4 up to serve for the set. 

 “Personally for me it would be amazing to win a medal at the Olympics, which I don’t have. It would mean the world to us”, Sania told reporters after the match.

The fourth seeded Indian pair entered the quarterfinals and will take on the unseeded Great Britain pair of Andy Murray and Heather Watson who beat Spanish combo of David Ferrer and Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3 6-3 in another first round match. 

Mirza and Bopanna had suffered first round defeats in both men’s and women’s doubles events in Rio Olympics.
