Rio Olympics: Sania Mirza and Prarthana Thombare loose first match in women’s doubles

World No 1 in the women's doubles rankings, Sania Mirza (29), and Prarthana Thombare (22) lost their first round match against the Chinese pair of Shuai Zhang (27) and Peng Shuai (30) at the Olympic Tennis Centre.

The Chinese pair defeated Sania and Prarthana 6-7 (6), 7-5, 5-7 in two hours and 44 minutes.

The second set saw Indian combo take a 2-0 and subsequently 3-1 lead but the opponents came back well to make it 5-5. The Chinese duo then lost their serve as Sania-Prarthana won the set 7-5 in 49 minutes.

In the decider, the Indians were back in even keel to make it 3-3.

In the 9th game, the Indians were broken again as Chinese pair served for the match at 5-4. But there was more drama in store as they were broken to level scoreline 5-5.

The Chinese pair closed the match in the 12th game.

“India always wants gold for me no matter what I play. At the end of the day, we can just try. There is no guarantee in a sport. We can just try and give our best,” Sania told reporters after the match.

The team of Rohan Bopanna and Sania would next play mixed doubles. Sania Mirza remained confident of winning a medal for India.
