Uttarakhand: Baby Rani Maurya takes oath as the governor of the state

Baby Rani Maurya, who was the first female mayor of Agra, was on Sunday sworn in as the new Governor of Uttarakhand.

Mrs Maurya who became the second woman to be the governor of Uttarakhand, after Margaret Alwa in 2009, said women empowerment and protection of the girl child will be the areas of her focus.She was nominated as Governor of Uttarakhand  on August 21 and replaced Krishna Kant Paul whose five-year tenure ended recently. 

Talking to reporters, the Governor expressed her commitment to the development of the state. Describing Uttarakhand as one of the leading states in the country, she said her efforts would be directed towards contributing to its development.

Mrs Maurya does not come from the family f politicians. She became active in politics in the early 1990s, following her marriage to a bank officer, Pradeep Kumar Maurya, who now serves on the advisory board of the Punjab National Bank (PNB) .

She began her political career as a party worker of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and later has contested an election on a BJP ticket for the post of mayor of Agra,which shed won by a large mandate.
