Gurdaspur bypoll: AAP names Major General Khajuria as its candidate

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday named Major General Suresh Khajuria (retired) as its candidate from the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat.

The bypoll is scheduled for October 11 and results will be declared on October 15.

The Gurdaspur seat felt vacant due to the death of actor-turned-politician and BJP leader Vinod Khanna, who passed away in April this year.

The field 64-year-old Major General Khajuria hails from Bungal village in Pathankot.

As per reports, he has served two tenures as Brigade and Division Commander in Punjab during his 37 years of service. The former officer said he had joined politics to serve the state which had given him a lot. He joined AAP party 2012-13.

Mr Khaira has criticized Capt Amarinder Singh government, alleging failure to deliver on promises made during the assembly polls. He has claimed that the situation has not improved in the state as farmers were still committing suicides.

The Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat has been a stronghold of the BJP so far.
