Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Friday met with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi to discuss the Articles 35-A and Article 370.

"Our agenda is - no fiddling with status quo and the PM assured that article 370 will be respected," she said to reporters after the meeting.

Mufti said that the basis of her PDP's alliance with the BJP is that the "status quo of 370 has to be maintained".

Article 35A, which empowers the Jammu and Kashmir legislature to define the state's "permanent residents" and their special rights and privileges, is being challenged in the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has also asked the Centre to respond to another petition that challenges the validity of Article 370 of the Constitution, which grants Jammu and Kashmir its autonomous status. Article 370 guarantees special status to the state, restricting the central government’s power to only three subjects - defence, foreign affairs and communication.

In January 2017, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmi has commented that anybody raking up Article 370 and Section 35 A repeatedly, is hurting the soul of Kashmir. Vowing to oppose any such move, she said, “There will be no bigger anti-national thing than this because when you weaken this uniqueness of Kashmir through judiciary, then those forces in Kashmir Valley, who want to put an end to the composite culture in Kashmir Valley and want to have people from one community (Muslims) only, with one attire and one way of life, you will only make them successful.”

Mehbooba met opposition National Conference president Farooq Abdullahearlier this week to seek the support of his party on the issue.

Mufti’s meeting with the PM comes a day after, the BJP spokesperson in the state Virendra Gupta said the "time has come for the people of Jammu and Kashmir to say goodbye to Article 370 and revoke Article 35 A."
