Jammu and Kashmir  Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday addressed a youth convention organised by the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Srinagar.

Mufti has expressed her concerns over the incidents of stone-throwing and asked youth to contest the upcoming panchayat elections and become a stakeholder in the development process.

“You should participate in the upcoming panchayat polls and I promise you I will empower you and it will be you who will decide about the local developmental issue,” Mehbooba said while addressing the convention.

The panchayat elections should  be held in April and the process of polling will take about a month. The panchayats elected in 2011 had ceased to exist in July last year and there was a lot of pressure on the government to hold polls in the rural areas to strengthen the grassroots democracy.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday urged youth of the State to support the PDP-BJP coalition government for their secure future and asserted that if the youth give up stone pelting they would becoming number one in the entire world.

“The alliance between PDP and BJP in Jammu and Kashmir was stitched for welfare of youth and getting the State out of its difficulties,” Mehbooba said.

She said the objective for forming the coalition government with BJP was to ensure youth of the State a secure future by way of political stability and economic prosperity.

Making an emotional appeal, Mehbooba said it is painful to see the youth with stones in their hands. She said the youth were her family and they were her bodyguards whenever she used to visit the villages in the past.

“My acquaintance with you is not new. Today I have so many bodyguards but it was the youths who would form a protective layer around me when I would visit remote areas earlier. You were my bodyguards. Today I am pained to see the youths having stones in their hands,” she said.

Mehbooba also said that at a meeting of Unified Headquarters a couple of months ago, she had given clear instructions to security forces to make all efforts to bring back the youths who do not face any serious charge to the mainstream.

Over 8000 youth were arrested and booked in cases during over five-month long Kashmiri unrest last year, following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani on July 8.

“In Kashmir, only graveyards have seen a rise. I want to make parks and gardens where you will work,” she said.
