J Jayalalithaa sworn in as Tamil Nadu chief minister for a historic second consecutive term

Jayalalithaa Jayaram (68), the leader of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) was on Monday sworn in as Tamil Nadu chief minister for a historic second consecutive term.

Previously J Jayalalitha served as Chief Minister from 1991 to 1996, in 2001, from 2002 to 2006 and from 2011 to 2016.

Jayalalitha became the second Chief minister after Marudhur Gopalan Ramachandran (Dr.MGR) to be elected as CM consecutively twice.

J Jayalalithaa won elections in Tamil Nadu on May 19th, with a huge margin of 39545 votes by which retained RK Nagar constituency after defeating DMK rival.

AIADMK, is currently in power in Tamil Nadu and is the third largest party in the Lok Sabha.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at the centenary hall of the University of Madras. Governor K Rosaiah administered the oath of office and secrecy. Union minister for urban development Venkaiah Naidu represented Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the swearing-in ceremony as the Prime Minister is currently on a two-day visit to Iran.

Her 28 cabinet colleagues, including former chief minister O Panneerselvam were also sworn in.

The oath ceremony was attended by top political leaders, film stars and industrialists.
