Dense fog continues in Chandigarh, Haryana and Punjab, for the last three days with visibility going down to almost zero in the mornings.

As per police, a 41-year-old man was hit by an ambulance in dense fog near the Dhanas bridge in Chandigarh on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. An ambulance driver was booked under Sections 304A (causing death by negligence) and 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He was arrested, but later got bail.

A thick fog adversely affected air, rail and road traffic in the region.

As many as nine flights were cancelled and another nine delayed at the Chandigarh international airport on New Years day on Monday. As per reports two flight were diverted to Jaipur as the airport is not equipped with modern Instrument Landing System (ILS) and flights cannot land if the visibility drops below 1000 metres.

The situation is no different with train services with trains running late.

As per railway officials Kalka Mail reached the city at a delay of over 18 hours while New Delhi-Kalka Shatabdi arrived five hours late.

Meanwhile, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, during Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, said that lesser number of trains are running in late than flights due to fog this year because of constant efforts for computerisation of the signalling system. The minister said the railways have given highest priority on safety and highlighted the public transporter's focus on computerisation of the signalling system, which continues to run through the old system started before independence.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has reported dry weather in the region for the next 48 hours.
