GMDA closes 6-km stretch of Airport Road; traffic has been divertedGreater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMDA) has taken a decision to close the 6 km stretch of Airport Road in Mohali, in the light of fatal accidents on the road.

“The road has been founded on black cotton soil, on which no road can survive,” a senior official of GMADA told reporters.

“When water seeps into the road and reaches the black cotton soil, the soil swells. It either breaks the road or develops mounds on it. If we carry out repair work or patch work, it will be of no use again,” said an engineer of GMADA.

“It seems the only solution left with us is to wipe out the entire stretch in question and reconstruct the road again”.

The stretch from Airport Chowk to the Banur-Landran road T-point has been closed for traffic.

Traffic has been diverted on the Zirakpur-Banur road (NH-64) while those who want to go to IT City will have to use the service lanes along the stretch.
