Fatehgarh Sahib: Giani Gurmukh Singh removed as Takht Damdama Sahib jathedar

Giani Gurmukh Singh, the acting Jathedar (ordained leader of the clergy)  of Takht Damdama Sahib was removed from the post on Friday over ‘violation of Sikh maryada’.  

The decisiion was taken by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) in a meeting of its executive at Fatehgarh Sahib on Friday.

Giani Gurmukh Singh was also accused for not attending any of the meetings convened by other Takht heads, and issuing the controversial statements. Giani Gurmukh also lost the post of head granthi of the Golden Temple.

The charge was given to head granthi of Gurdwara Muktsar Sahib Harpreet Singh, while Giani Gurmukh was made a head granthi of Gurdwara Nauwin Patshahi Dhamtan Sahib in Haryana’s Jind district. 

Giani Gurmukh Singh, the Golden Temple head granthi, took over additional charge of the jathedar, Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, on January 27, 2015.

Sikh clergy consists of five Jathedars, one each from five takhts or sacred seats. The Jathedar of Akal Takht makes all the important decisions after consultations with the Jathedars of the other four Takhts.
