People going to Sangrur and Bathinda from Chandigarh can now escape the city traffic, as the long waited Southern bypass was opened a decade after being under construction.

The project was inaugurated by Preneet Kaur, wife of Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday.

The bypass that originates from the Urban Estate in Patiala touches the National Highway-64 on the main Sangrur road near Bhakra canal, after moving along Sanaur and Sher Majra.

The bypass built by the Border Roads BRO, was opened in June 2015 but ways closed days later due to inadequate road width and uneven road structure at several points.

In 2015, the Punjab government took over the project and gave the contract to a private company.
