The dust storm and heavy winds recorded at the speed of 70 km per hour on Thursday hit power and water supply in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula.

Residents were left without power for several hours as trees, branches fell on electricity wires.

Around 14 trees were uprooted at different sectors in Chandigarh.

A major tragedy was averted after a tall tree fell in a parking lot near the administrative block of Panjab University. The tree smashed several two-wheelers and uprooted an electricity pool. Fortunately, no one was injured.

The department also snapped power supply to many areas as a precautionary measure to avoid any mishap while carrying out the repair work. The affected areas included Sectors 23, 24, 25, 17, 19, 18, 21, 22, 41, 44, 8, 7, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 45, 46 and 47, Mani Majra, Burail and many villages.

In Panchkula residents of the Sectors 4, 5, 6, 10, 15, 25 and 26 faced power outages due to the breakdown of the line.

The supply of water and power were also disrupted in parts of Mohali.

A senior MC official said in areas where the water supply was through tubewells, there was a problem due to power cut. Without electricity there was no pumping of water which hit the water supply in those areas, he added.

Chandigarh city recorded a rainfall of 5.3 mm over the past 24 hours. High winds followed by brief showers brought down the minimum temperature by over 5°C.
