Kerala floods: 22,000 people rescued, 1 thousand still stranded in five villages around Chengannur

South Indian state Kerala is hit by the heavy floods resolving in 191 deaths.

As per media, the rescue teams have saved about 22,000 people, but at least one thousand people are still stranded in five villages around Chengannur.

As per officials, relief supplies were taken to stranded residents by military teams as well as disaster response forces. Local fishermen reached some of the worst hit areas to help the ones in need. Food packets and medicines are being dropped from helicopters.

According to the reports, the number of people taking refuge in the 5,645 relief camps is around 725,000.

As the floodwater has started receding, the red alert in the state was finally removed on Sunday, but some districts still have orange and yellow alerts.

Commercial flight were resumed on Monday, however, the main Kochi airport will remain closed till August 26.

As per officials, even though, the monsoon rains had eased, the bigger concern now is lack of clean drinking water and diseases.

Meanwhile, the head of the state's disaster management team, Anil Vasudevan, said he was preparing to deal with a possible outbreak of waterborne and airborne diseases in temporary relief camps. At least three people were already isolated with chickenpox in a camp in Aluva, about 250km from state capital Thiruvananthapuram.

As per reports, during the period of August 8 and 15th, Kerala has received over 250 per cent more rain than normal, making authorities to release water from 35 dams.

Initial estimates suggest the floods have caused damage of Rs 20,000 crore, but this is expected to rise.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi who surveyed the state from the air on Saturday has promised an immediate financial assistance of Rs 500 crore to Kerala an ex-gratia sum of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those seriously injured from Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
