Patiala: farmers begin 6-day protest

As the district administration on Thursday denied permission to farmer unions to protest outside the Chief Minister’s residence in Patiala, hundreds of farmers gathered at a grain market at Mehmadpur village on Patiala-Sangrur road, 5 km from here.

The farmers started their six-day protest against the Punjab government on Friday.

They threaten to take the protest to Delhi and make it a national issue wherein farmers from all states will protest.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh appealed to the farmers to be patient, saying that the steps to waive the crop loans of farmers had been initiated and a notification would be issued soon. 

The Minister has ordered the release of all farmers taken into preventive detention ahead of the Kisan Unions’ protest.As per reports, of the total 377 rounded up, 34 have already been released while 308 are in judicial custody and 35 in police custody.

Meanwhile, the Punjab and Haryana high court on Thursday ordered to extend the deployment of paramilitary forces in Patiala till September 26.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC continue in Patiala and the city has been sealed from all sides with heavy deployment of police force.
