The Supreme Court on Tuesday sentenced Calcutta’s High Court judge C S Karnan to six month jail for committing contempt of the apex court, judiciary and judicial process.

Yesterday, Karnan had "sentenced" the Chief Justice and seven judges of the Supreme Court to five years in jail.

"Whosoever commits contempt gets punished," the bench said while sentencing Justice Karnan.

Karnan, who was to retire on June 11, will spend the last month of his tenure as judge and five months thereafter in jail.

The court also banned the media from highlighting Justice Karnan's statements and "orders".

At a hearing on March 31, the Chief Justice had raised questions about the judge's mental health.

The Supreme Court on May 1, constituted a medical board in Kolkata to examine the mental health of Karnan, but last week he had turned away a team of psychiatrists who had arrived along with the police for his medical examination.

The 61-year-old judge was accused of contempt after he named 20 "corrupt judges" of the country earlier this year and sought an investigation alleging corruption in the judiciary.

He also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging an inquiry.

The Justice Karnan said he was being victimised because he is a Dalit.
