The Madhya Pradesh Government has ordered a judicial probe into an alleged encounter near Bhopal during which police killed eight SIMI operatives  hours after they escaped from the Bhopal Central Jail after murdering a security guard on October 30.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had earlier announced a NIA probe into the incident.

The probe will be conducted by retired Justice S.K. Pandey. The panel will probe the circumstances under which SIMI operatives escaped and the encounter in which they were killed by police.

Opposition parties have raised questions on the encounter after video clips showed a jawan opening fire on one of the men, as he lay motionless on the ground. A nine-minute audio clip believed to be from the police control room in Bhopal recorded on the day when the eight undertrial prisoners were gunned down in a police encounter, raised doubts whether the encounter was genuine or fake.

The authenticity of the audio tape has not been verified yet.

On the basis of media reports, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to Madhya Pradesh chief secretary, director general of police and the director general and inspector general of prisons to send detailed reports, within six weeks, about the encounter deaths.
