Commanding Officer killed in Srinagar encounter

One jawan was killed and nine others were injured in the encounter between security forces and militants in Srinagar on Monday despite the prevailing high security alert in the state for Independence Day.

The incident occurred at around 8.30 am when militants fired at the security forces in Nowhatta area triggering an encounter. The militants entered in a building which was immediately cordoned off. The gunmen were unable to take control of the police station but did wound five security personnel in the attack.

The Commanding Officer (CO) of 4th Battalion of the CRPF Pramod Kumar was martyred during a gunbattle. The officer killed two terrorists before he was shot at in the neck.

Three more militants are believed to be on the run and police have launched a manhunt. A police spokesman said that the identity of the militants is being ascertained and that two AK rifles, eight magazines with ammunition have been recovered from the encounter site. 

Kumar was posted to Srinagar in April 2014 and was recently promoted as a commandant. He hailed from Patna in Bihar.

“Pramod Kumar was given DG's commendation disc in 2015 and commendation certificate in 2014 for "highest operational acumen", CRPF chief K Durga Prasad told the reporters.

He served in Jammu, Srinagar, Tripura, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh in different capacities and took part in different operations.
