Meanwhile, the new elected President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President M Hamid Ansari extended Raksha Bandhan greetings to the citizens on the eve of the festival.

In his message, Mr Kovind hoped that the countrymen would "renew" the spirit of fraternity among themselves on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.

While, Ansari urged the citizens to "rededicate" themselves to upholding the dignity and respect of women.

Raksha Bandhan is a time for family members to come together, celebrate and feast on traditional dishes. The common tradition associated with the occasion is the sister tying rakhi  (sacred thread) on her brother’s hand and the brother on his part also gifts his beloved sister something precious in return. The festival is observed on the full moon day of the Hindu luni-solar calendar month of Shravana, which typically falls in Gregorian calendar month of August.
