Tension was witnessed at Panjab University (PU) in Chandigarh of Friday, as the university authorities had denied permission to the Students for Society (SFS) to hold the seminar ‘Rising head of Fascism’ in a presence of social activist Seema Azad.

After Azad was not allowed inside of the campus, the SFS student activists protested outside the Vice-Chancellor's office.

Following the protests, the police on Friday arrested SFS leader Daman.

Eighty police personnel and 90 security staff of the university were deployed at Student Centre and the three gates to maintain the order at the campus. No outsider was allowed to enter the campus.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists on Thursday took part in the Tiranga rally at Panjab University against the participation of social activist Seema Azad, claiming she had been awarded life imprisonment by the Allahabad Sessions Court on sedition charge and link with Maoists.

The student party used a loudspeaker and carried the National Flag while taking a round of the campus.

The developments at PU came days after ABVP members allegedly attacked activists of left-leaning students groups at Ramjas College in Delhi over inviting JNU student Umar Khalid to a seminar, re-igniting a debate on free speech and nationalism.
