Kupwara:11 killed in a snow avalanche in north Kashmir

Eleven people were killed on Friday in a snow avalanche in north Kashmir's Kupwara district.

As per police, the snow avalanche has swept away a vehicle with 10 passenger travelling in it.

The incident took place at Sadhna Top in Tangdhar area of the district at 4 pm on Friday. The people were reportedly on their way from Kupwara to Karnah in a Tata Sumo. 

Two more passengers (from another vehicle), standing on the road, also came under the avalanche and were pushed down into a 400-feet deep, officials said. They were rescued immediately.

A Border Roads Organisation engineer, who was also hit by an avalanche in the same area, was recovered but could not be revived. The officer was on the road clearance duty, when the avalanche struck, officials said.

At least four to five feet snow has accumulated near the Sadhna top, which usually witnesses heavy snowfall during winters, officials said.
