Lalu Prasad Yadav sentenced to 3.5 years in prison in the second fodder scam case

Former Chief Minister of Bihar, Lalu Prasad Yadav (69) was on Saturday sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison in the second fodder scam case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation court has also fined Mr Prasad Rs 10 lakh, failure to pay would lead to a six-month extension to his term.

On 23 December 2017, the CBI court found him guilty in the second of five fodder scam cases related to the fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 84.5 lakh from the Deoghar district treasury in Bihar between 1990 and 1994.

In July 2017 the Enforcement Directorate and CBI lodged several criminal cases against Lalu's son and deputy Cief Minister, Tejashwi Yadav.

While, Mr Prasad has been convicted and jailed in 2 scams, he and his family, including wife Rabri Devi, son Tejashwi Yadav and daughter Misa Bharti have has been charged in several other corruption cases.

On 30 September 2013, Lalu Prasad Yadav, along with 44 other accused, was convicted by CBI court at Ranchi, after being found guilty in fraudulent withdrawal of Rs.37 crores from Chaibasa treasury.

Several other politicians, IAS officers were also convicted in the case. 

After the verdict was pronounced, Laloo Prasad Yadav was arrested and taken to Birsa Munda Central Jail, located at Ranchi. 

As per media reports, Mr Prasad on Friday, sought a minimum punishment citing health issues. 

"I have no role in this scam directly; consider minimum punishment keeping in view my age and health grounds," said Lalu in his plea.
