Kulgam: militants kidnap and kill Army officer

A 23-year-old Kashmiri army officer was shot dead while home on leave in south Kashmir's Kulgam district.

According to the police, Ummer Fayaz, a Lieutenant rank Army officer, was kidnapped by militants from the house of his maternal uncle at Shopian on Tuesday night.

Mr Fayaz went to attend a marriage of his cousin at Batapura village.

The officer’s body with two bullet marks was recovered from Hermain Chowk in Shopian on Wednesday morning, a Shopian police officer said.

“The Army salutes the braveheart and stands by the family. It commits itself to bringing the perpetrators of the heinous act to justice,” the Army spokesperson said.

Ummer Fayaz was commissioned as lieutenant on December 10, 2016, and was posted at the Army’s 2 Rajputana Rifles at Akhnoor.

He is survived by parents and two sisters.
