Chandigarh Administration has decided to renew the bar licenses of hotels, restaurants, discotheques and clubs following the clarification issued by the Supreme Court last week.

The decision brings relief to the hotel and restaurant owners of Sector 26 on Madhya Marg, Sector 43 and Sector 35 that were closed since April.

The Supreme Court on December 15, 2016, had imposed a ban on sale of liquor within 500 metres of state and national highways.

As per reports, more than 100 hotels and restaurants on national and state highways were affected by the ban and more than 2,000 people lost their jobs.

On July 11, the court clarified that the ban is not applicable within municipal limits. However, this year, liquor vends will not be opened on sector roads as the places for these have already been notified in the excise policy announced in March.

After getting clearance from legal remembrance (LR), the UT excise and taxation department on August 29, started excepting the applications from hoteliers.

Now owners would have to apply afresh for the renewal of their licenses. As per media reports, the department would levy fees for the whole year on the owners, which has been hiked by approximately Rs 1 lakh since last year.
