Nearly 3,800 traders in Chandigarh are about to lose their registration as they filed to register under the new GST regime.

The traders had time till March 4 to get registration numbers under the new GST portal, but nearly 3,800 of them failed to do so, the department of Excise and Taxation said.

The process of enabling dealers to ‘migrate’ to GST was started in Chandigarh in December 2016.

Provisional IDs and passwords for logging in to the GST portal were supplied in the beginning of December itself.

However, it was observed that certain traders failed to enrol themselves on the GST portal.

“This can only be attributed to the fact that no business activity is being carried out. Under these circumstances, it becomes imperative that their registration certificates be cancelled with immediate effect,” Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner (AETC) told the reporters.
